East Lyme police charge man in Saturday crash

East Lyme — Police have arrested a North Carolina man who they say fled after driving a pickup truck into a tree Saturday afternoon on Quarry Dock Road in Niantic.

According to a police, Gunner Dill, 21, of Camp Lejeune, N.C., was charged with evading responsibility, reckless driving, taking a vehicle without the owner’s permission and second-degree reckless endangerment. He was released on a $10,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in New London Superior Court on July 17.

Police said that at 2:55 p.m. Saturday, they received calls about a pickup truck striking a tree. Niantic firefighters extricated a severely injured, 21-year-old Rhode Island woman from the heavily damaged truck. She was flown by Life Star Helicopter to Hartford Hospital. She is still in the hospital but in stable condition, according to East Lyme Police Chief Michael Finkelstein.

Police said they along with K9 units from the Waterford Police Department and state police searched the Oswegatchie Hills area for Dill who was eventually located at a residence.

He was transported to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital for treatment of a minor injury and released. He was then arrested and charged.

Police said they have determined Dill took a truck from a home where he was on Saturday. The East Lyme and Waterford Police Department Accident Reconstruction Team investigated the crash.
