After a summer docked at the Custom House Pier, the historic New York City fireboat Fire Fighter departed for a maintenance trip to a Rhode Island shipyard.

The vessel, which served the Fire Department of the city of New York from 1938 to 2010, is operated out of Greenport, N.Y., as America's Fireboat-Fire Fighter Museum.

Fire Fighter was open for tours on weekends this summer.

Charles Ritchie of the America's Fireboat-Fire Fighter Museum says they expect to spend about a month in drydock at J. Goodison shipyard in North Kingstown and then hope to spend the remainder of the fall and winter at Mystic Seaport Museum.
