Make a Difference: Jonnycake Center of Westerly
WHO: Adrianna, a 38-year-old single mother, and her kids Ana, 16, and David, 12

THEIR SITUATION: Like many, Adrianna was working two jobs to make ends meet before the pandemic. With lockdowns and business closures in the spring, she was laid off from one job and her hours were reduced at the other. She contacted the Jonnycake Center's Social Services Department to learn how her family could receive assistance.
WHAT TO GIVE: The Jonnycake Center is seeking financial support in lieu of donated items, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, when items need to be quarantined for safety. Financial donations can be used to distribute as emergency financial assistance or to purchase food in bulk for the pantry. With Adrianna's income at less than 50% of what she had been making, the Jonnycake Center's Social Services Department offered her financial assistance so she could continue paying her rent. She registered for the center's food pantry, and Ana and David benefited from programs that provide children with free groceries on weekends, school holidays and summer break. Through the annual Adopt-a-Family program, Adrianna has received gift cards that allowed her to purchase gifts, supplies and meals.
