Updated: Police identify cyclist injured in Stonington as Michael Graner

Stonington — Police have identified the male cyclist, who was seriously injured on Route 1 in the vicinity of Cove Road when he was struck by a car about 2:20 p.m. Thursday, as Michael Graner, 71, of Mystic.

Police said the cyclist was brought Thursday to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital for treatment but was conscious at the scene. Both the cyclist and car were traveling west on Route 1.

Graner was listed in stable condition on Friday night and was being admitted to Yale New Haven Hospital, off-shift executive Kathleen von Hofe said about 9:28 p.m. Friday.

L+M spokesperson Fiona Phelan said he had been discharged from L+M on Thursday.

On Saturday, family members shared on social media that Graner broke two vertebrate in his neck and broke his wrist, and thanked people for the outpouring of support.

Graner, a longtime superintendent of Groton Public Schools, had retired at the end of 2020. He championed the Groton 2020 plan, intended to promote equity, to build a new consolidated middle school and two new intradistrict elementary schools on the sites of the former middle schools.

The library media center at Groton Middle School was named in honor of Graner, who is also a retired U.S. Coast Guard captain who taught literature at the Coast Guard Academy. He became superintendent of Groton Public Schools in 2014, after serving as superintendent in Ledyard for 10 years.

Stonington police Sgt. Louis Diamanti said Saturday the cause of the accident remains under investigation, and an accident reconstruction team was called out.

But he confirmed that no use of alcohol or drugs was involved, and said the driver stopped and rendered aid.
