K-9 trooper finds man hiding in swamp in Montville after fleeing crash
Montville — A man who fled the scene of a crash on Interstate 395 early Thursday was found hiding near a prison in Montville after leading police and a K-9 trooper on a search through the woods.
Nnamdii R. Ross, 34, of 18 Dillon Lane, Unit A, Norwich, was found lying against a hill in a swamp near the Corrigan Radgowski Correctional Center in Montville after fleeing from a crash near Connecticut State Police Troop E barracks just after midnight, according to state police.
Troopers from Troop E responded about 12:23 a.m. to reports of a crash on I-395 north. The vehicle involved in the crash was left on the highway, blocking both lanes, and the driver had fled the scene. Police declined to provide details of the crash or whether any other vehicles were involved.
Police received a call from Montville residents who said they saw a man who fit the description of the driver running through their yard and hiding behind their sheds. By the time troopers arrived, he was gone.
State police K-9 Yorik, along with Troop E troopers and officers from the Montville Police Department, tracked the man through a wooded, swampy area near the prison. Yorik eventually found the man lying against the hillside in a swamp at the base of the prison.
Ross did not immediately comply with officers, he kept one hand concealed and tossed a small bag into the woods. Troopers later found the bag, which they said contained cocaine, about 10 feet away.
Ross, who failed a sobriety test, was taken into custody and charged with interfering with an officer, possession of a controlled substance, leaving the scene of an accident, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, driving without a license and failure to drive in the proper lane, police said.
He was released on a $5,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in court in Norwich on May 13, police said.
