East Lyme responders revive fourth overdose victim this year
For the fourth time this year, an emergency responder in East Lyme has used Narcan to revive someone from a drug overdose.
An officer with the East Lyme Police Department responded to a call involving an unresponsive man on Black Point Road who had reportedly ingested fentanyl, police said in a news release. The man regained consciousness shortly after the officer administered the overdose-reversing drug.
Police said the man was transported to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital by the Niantic Fire Department Ambulance, which arrived just after the officer.
Police attributed the successful outcome to the officer's quick response, along with the fact that the officer was equipped with Narcan.
Police Chief Michael Finkelstein said police, fire and EMS responders in East Lyme have used Narcan four times this year. In two of those cases, the drug was administered by members of his department. In 2020, the drug was used 15 times, 10 by officers.
Finkelstein described Narcan as highly successful in reversing overdoses. He said most of the overdose deaths in town occurred in cases "where Narcan wasn't even administered because it was beyond that point."
According to data from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, three men died in East Lyme from overdoses in 2020.
