UConn beats Michigan 6-1 in NCAA baseball tourney opener

South Bend, Ind. — Austin Peterson allowed just two hits over 5.2 innings and three relievers pitched no-hit ball the rest of the way as second-seeded UConn defeated No. 3 Michigan 6-1 on Saturday night in the opening round of the NCAA baseball regional tournament at Notre Dame.

The Huskies (34-17) will face the top-seeded Fighting Irish, who beat No. 4 Central Michigan 10-0 in Friday's opener, in a winners' bracket game of the double-elimination regional on Saturday at 6 p.m. The winner will advance to Sunday's championship round needing just one victory in two games to advance to the Super Regionals.

Peterson (8-1) walked three and struck out seven for the Huskies, who were led offensively by Erik Stock, who was 4-for-4 with three RBI, including a big-two run double that drove in UConn's final two runs.

Freshman Chris Brown also had two hits and two RBI for the Huskies while senior Chris Winkel was 2-for-4.

In other regional action, fourth-seeded Central Connecticut State University lost a slugfest to top-seed and host Oregon, 13-10, in Eugene, while Arizona State scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to rally past Fairfield, 7-6, in the Austin (Texas) regional.

Montville's Buddy DeWaine, a CCSU senior, had a hit and two walks in five trips for the Blue Devils (28-14), who will try to extend their season in a losers' bracket game on Saturday between the loser of Friday's late game between Gonzaga and LSU.

Fairfield (37-4) will play Southern University in an elimination game in Austin.
