The United Theater in Westerly reopens with films

The United Theatre in Westerly has been undergoing renovations, but the time has come: it's officially opening on Friday.

First up are movie screenings, of "Black Widow" and "Summer of Soul." Visit unitedtheatre.org for updated details.

The groundbreaking for the arts complex was in May 2019, to transform it into a venue whose spaces could be used for entertainment, education and more. The location on Canal Street combines the former United Theatre and the adjoining Montgomery Ward building.

The United was built in 1926 as a vaudeville house, became a movie theater, and eventually closed in 1986. It remained unused for two decades before the Westerly Land Trust bought it in 2006.
