Mystic -- Mystic Aquarium has no more free admissions available through the Connecticut Summer at the Museum program, which began July 1 and continues through Sept. 6.

Adopted in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the program, funded through the state’s allocation of American Rescue Plan funding, enables all Connecticut children 18 and younger, plus an accompanying adult, to visit free of charge more than 90 participating museums, historic sites, science centers and zoos.

Over the weekend, the aquarium accepted reservations for its remaining free-admission slots, Kendall Rabeneck, an aquarium spokesman, said Monday.

Many of the program’s participating museums have been overwhelmed by the public's response, and have been limiting the number of free admissions they make available each day, according to Elizabeth Shapiro, who’s overseeing the program for the state Department of Economic and Community Development.

Mystic Seaport Museum, which has no capacity limits based on time of admission, will meet all requests for free admissions, except during the WoodenBoat Show, Aug. 20-22, Dan McFadden, a museum spokesman, said.

Niantic Children’s Museum has experienced an increase in attendance since the program began and is limiting the free-admission reservations it accepts to 100 a day, Rita Rivera, the museum’s marketing and graphics director, said.
