Health of Mystic Aquarium whale improving

Mystic -- Mystic Aquarium has announced that a female beluga whale which arrived from Marineland Canada this spring but became ill continues to progress toward recovery.

Daniel Pesquera, the aquarium's interim director of public relations, said the whale remains in stable condition and aquarium veterinarians "continue to see consistent, incremental improvements in her overall health."

He said the "whale's appetite has been steadily increasing, and the nutrition we are providing has been an important factor in positive changes to her condition. She appears more comfortable and engaged each day as our veterinarian and animal care teams progress through the round-the-clock treatment and observation schedule. We still have a good deal of work to do before she achieves recovery, and our staff remains tirelessly focused on bringing her back to full health."

The aquarium had announced Aug. 24 that the beluga, one of the five whales that arrived at Mystic Aquarium in May from Marineland in Niagara Falls, Canada, had "several concerning health complications, including a low white blood cell count and gastrointestinal issues." It said at the time the whale was "extremely ill and failing."That announcement came after one of the five belugas, a male, had died Aug. 6.
