Lottery game drew a 9-1-1 winner on 9/11

For some lottery players, 9-1-1 paid off.

More than 14,000 single-wager lottery tickets with the winning numbers 9-1-1 were purchased in Connecticut prior to Saturday night's drawing, the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks.

The number of 9-1-1 tickets sold for that date was far more than usual, lottery records show. The odds of 9-1-1 being drawn on any given day are 1 in 1,000, according to the lottery.

According to the lottery, 8,122 “straight” Play3 Night single-wager tickets were sold for Saturday’s drawing, each good for $250 in winnings. To win a straight bet, the numbers had to be in the proper order.

Another 6,479 single-wager “box” tickets paid off, each paying $83.50. Box wagers paid off if the numbers matched those drawn in any order (9-1-1, 1-9-1 or 1-1-9).

“We’ve had quite a few players asking to double check the numbers,” a lottery spokeswoman said Monday.

On Sept. 4, the previous Saturday, the Play3 Night game’s winning 6-4-4 number resulted in fewer than 300 straight and box single-wager winning tickets.

Play3 is played in increments of 50 cents, beginning at 50 cents and ranging up to $5 per wager.
