Sports wagering scheduled to launch statewide Oct. 7

    Rams? Seahawks?

Online sports wagering in Connecticut is scheduled to launch Thursday, Oct. 7, the start of Week 5 of the 2021 National Football League season, state officials have confirmed.

The Los Angeles Rams meet the Seattle Seahawks that night (at 8:20 p.m. on Fox), with the rest of Week 5’s NFL games to be played Sunday, Oct. 10.

“As long as all the operators have all their required documents filed on time, that’s the date,” Kaitlyn Krasselt, a spokeswoman for the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection, said Friday of the Oct. 7 launch. The department oversees gaming in the state.

Online sportsbooks operated by the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan tribes and the Connecticut Lottery Corp. will launch at the same time, Krasselt said.

Rodney Butler, the Mashantucket chairman, said Friday his tribe’s Foxwoods Resort Casino could begin offering on-site sports wagering at Foxwoods’ racebook and self-serve kiosks at the casino before Oct. 7. The casino plans to open a permanent sportsbook later in October, he said.

A seven-day “soft” launch of online betting in the state, during which all systems will be tested, must be concluded prior to Oct. 7, Butler said.

The lottery is on track to launch Oct. 7, both online and at retail locations, according to Tara Chozet, a lottery spokeswoman.

“We will begin with three retail locations at launch — the two Bobby V’s in Stamford and Windsor Locks, and SportsHaven in New Haven,” Chozet wrote in an email. “The other seven locations that we previously announced will begin taking bets in the weeks to follow.”

The lottery has been authorized to operate up to 15 locations. The 10 it's announced so far are to be operated in a partnership with Sportech Venues, the state’s off-track betting operator.

A Mohegan tribal spokesman confirmed that the tribe is readying for the Oct. 7 launch following the soft launch the week before.

Both tribes also have been authorized to begin offering online casino gaming.
