    Local colleges: Unbeaten Coast Guard men upset No. 8 WPI 2-1

    Worcester, Mass. — John Flood broke a tie with a goal in the 64th minute as the Coast Guard men's soccer team beat No. 8 Worcester Polytechnic Institute 2-1 in its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference opener on Saturday.

    Mike Daunt of Coast Guard tied the game at 1-1 with a goal in the 47th minute. Lucas Tabit and Robbie Fugett had assists for the Bears (6-0-1). Coast Guard is ranked fifth in New England in Div. III and WPI is first.

    In other games:

    • MT Tshuma and Rye Jaran scored two goals each as Connecticut College beat Bates 5-1 in its New England Small College Athletic Conference opener. Allesandro Horvath Diano also scored, Steve Yeonas had two assists, Luke Cibelli and Alex Robles had assists for Conn (1-1). 

    Women's soccer

    • Old Lyme's Mya Johnson scored an early goal and Conn College held on to beat Bates 1-0 in their NESCAC opener. Johnson, a three-time all-state pick at Old Lyme, scored in the fifth minute off a deflection on an attempted clearance by Bates goalie Kat Nuckols. Sarah Hall made five saves for the Camels (2-0).

    • Coast Guard lost to Wellesley 2-1 in its NEWMAC opener. Sidney Palinkas scored the goal, Riley Vicinanzo assisted and Hope Drake-Duval made four saves for Coast Guard (2-4). 

    Men's cross country

    • No. 24 Conn College took the top two spots at the Bates Shootout as Matt Carter won the 8,000-meter run in 25:33 with teammate Jeffrey Love following in 25:59. Conn finished second with 43 points, behind No. 23 Bates (35). Stuart Pollock was fourth (27:14) and Max Notarnicola was 18th (27:14) for Conn.

    • Coast Guard opened its season with a 14th-place finish at the 30-team UMass Dartmouth Invitational. Freshman Kyle Bow led the Bears by finishing 30th in 25:24 and John Hanson was 79th (26:31). 

    Women's cross country

    • Conn College finished third at the Bates Shootout with 63 points, behind No. 22 Bates (26) and No. 6 Tufts (42). Julia Curran led the Camels with a seventh-place finish in the 5,000-meter race (19:19). Also making the top 15 for Conn were Emi Schwab (11th, 19:41), Rachel House (14th, 20:18) and Lauren Hino (15th, 20:21).

    • Coast Guard was fifth out of 30 teams at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational. Freshman Hope Scales was the Bears' top finisher, coming in 19th at 19:03, and teammate Paige Phillips was 20th in 19:06.

    Volleyball

    • Bowdoin beat Conn College in the NESCAC match, 25-16, 25-19 and 25-14. Avery Light had nine kills and two blocks, Lauren Carey had 21 assists and eight digs, Katie Gunderman had six kills and Julia Dailey had 13 digs for Conn (0-2, 0-2).

    • Coast Guard opened its NEWMAC schedule with a 3-1 loss to No. 23 Babson. Noelle Tursky had 21 assists and 14 digs, Bella Fleeger had 10 kills, Kaela France had 14 digs and Sophia Galdamez had seven kills for the Bears (6-4).

    • Mitchell split a pair of matches at SUNY Cobleskill, beating Keuka 3-2 cand losing to the hosts 3-1. Bree Rudolph had 15 kills and 20 digs and Claire Binfield had 36 assists and nine digs against Keuka. Allison Blum had 10 kills and 12 digs and Binfield had six kills, 30 assists and 18 digs for Mitchell (3-5) against Cobleskill.

    Field hockey

    • Conn College fell to Bates 5-0 in its NESCAC opener. Senior captain Jackie Mountford made a career-best 19 saves for Conn (0-2).

    Men's tennis

    • Coast Guard beat Merchant Marine 9-0 in the opener for both teams. Myles Decoste won 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2 singles and teamed with Sean Dreher to win 8-0 at No. 1 doubles. Banks Evans, Lucas Arora, Paul Choi, James Vuille-Kowing and Dreher won singles matches for the Bears, who took a 3-0 lead in the Superintendent's Trophy race with Merchant Marine.
