Taking the plunge
Coast Guard Academy cadets took to the waters of Stonington harbor for their first open water dive at DuBois Beach in Stonington Tuesday.
Instructor Barry Hurst teaches the scuba diving course offered as physical education credit at the academy.
Cadets spend the first half of the semester in the classroom training and in the pool working on technique before they do at least three open water dives. They earn their certification from the National Association of Underwater Instructors by the end of the course.
"It's not bad for a gym class," Hurst said, noting the course is one of the most popular options every year with a waiting list to get in.
