Ex-CCR star John Fogerty plays Foxwoods Saturday
For several years, whilst tangled in a lawsuit with his former band Creedence Clearwater Revival, guitarist/songwriter/singer John Fogerty refused to play any CCR songs during his solo tours.
I didn't see him during that period, but ... what the hell did he play? Yes, he's had solo hits — "The Old Man Down the Road," "Centerfield," "Rock and Roll Girls" — but even those lack the heft and iconic status of any of the seven million Creedence hits that HE wrote. Did he present a 14-minute show?
For the record, the leftover CCR dudes, still touring as "Creedence Clearwater Revisited," contributed almost nothing to the composition of the songs they play. In the spirit of fun, I compared a recent set list from Grammy-winning and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Fogerty — who performs the Premier Theater at Foxwoods Saturday — with one from the 2020 Creedence Clearwater Revisited tour.
The Revisited group plays 18 songs written by Fogerty — or covers like "I Put a Spell On You" or "Midnight Special" associated with the Fogerty years of Creedence. Fogerty, on the other hand, only plays 13 tunes from his Revival years. But, of course, that leaves room for the aforementioned solo works.
Interestingly, neither act plays "Sweet Hitchhiker" — in my opinion one of the finest Revival songs. But at least Revisited does "Lodi," another classic Fogerty is apparently avoiding. And Fogerty trots out "Keep On Chooglin'," which is a stupid song because, among other things, what does even mean to "choogle"?
This is all moot. The important thing is to see the guy who wrote and sang all these great songs. And that's John Fogerty.
