With 10+ classes for adults and kids, Yogapalooza happening at Avery Point for International Day of Yoga

Groton — International Day of Yoga is Tuesday, and people can celebrate at a new event in a scenic location: Yogapalooza, which the Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce, University of Connecticut Avery Point and Mystic Yoga Shala are hosting behind the Branford House at Avery Point.

Two classes will be held every hour from 2:15 through 7:15 p.m., starting at the quarter past each hour. Tickets for admission and entry to all yoga classes are $50, or $20 for kindergartners to college students.

The idea for Yogapalooza came from Annie Chapman, who teaches the Baptiste style of yoga — a form of hot power yoga — at Mystic Yoga Shala. Chapman said she and the chamber are making her personal dream come true "of creating a yoga event celebrating International Yoga Day that includes all our remarkable local yoga studios. Avery Point is my old stomping grounds as I grew up in Eastern Point."

Participating yoga instructors include Chapman, Kelly Harper, Maggie Skinner, Danielle Newton, Chelsea Hauck, Lindsey Quinn, Trish Reyburn, Emily Vanstaen and Kim Abraham. Some work independently and teach throughout the region, while others are instructors at Mystic Yoga Shala, Get Bent in Norwich, Hot on Bank in New London and Blissworks in New London.

Lynne Purtill will lead a class for kids ages 5 to 11 and Michelle Vanase is teaching a class for kids ages 8 to 13. Johnny Longinidis is conducting a workshop on breath work for adults.

From 6:15 to 8:15 p.m., Danielle Newton and her teacher Vedaji will be performing kirtan, a devotional call-and-response style of singing or chanting. At 8:25 p.m., Marlisa McLaughlin will present a sound bath with a gong.

The United Nations in December 2014 adopted a resolution declaring June 21, the summer solstice, as International Day of Yoga.
