How often should windshield wipers be replaced?

After faithfully working to keep rain, snow, and dead bugs from inhibiting your vision, your windshield wipers are eventually going to become less reliable.

The wiper blades might well be the automobile component that requires the most frequent replacement. However, these blades are inexpensive, easy to install, and crucial for getting you through hazardous conditions.

Windshield wipers usually need to be replaced every six to 12 months. Jim Leichter, writing for Biggers Chevy in Elgin, Ill., says weather conditions will determine whether you need to replace the wipers more or less frequently.

Wiper blades are constantly exposed to the elements due to their position on the exterior of the vehicle. Firestone Complete Auto Care says the New England region usually has a fair amount of rain and snow to clear away each year, and this frequent use subjects windshield wipers to more wear and tear.

The sand and salt used on the roads during the winter can also erode the blades. The summer heat also has an effect on the rubber, causing it to dry out and crack.

Some windshield wipers are designed to withstand more use. Patrick Britton, writing for the New Roads Automotive Group, says halogen-hardened and silicone blades will last longer, though they will also be more expensive.

Though the six to 12 month period for replacement is the general rule of thumb, it will become apparent when you need new wiper blades. They will start missing portions of the windshield as the rubber wears away, rubbing or bouncing over the glass, or making a scraping sound. If the blades wear down too far, the metal in the wiper blade may even start to scratch the glass.

A few quick fixes might extend the life of your wiper blades before they need to be replaced. Rick Popely, writing for Cars.com, recommends using a clean, damp cloth to wipe the blade and clear off any debris. You can also check to make sure the blade is correctly positioned against the windshield.

If you suspect your wiper blades are starting to wear down, it is advisable to replace them before they will be heavily used. Installing a new set in the autumn will ensure that you have a good set of windshield wipers on your car in advance of the winter season.
