Bravo, Bravo to leave Whaler's Inn space in Mystic

Mystic — The Whaler’s Inn announced Wednesday that the popular Bravo, Bravo restaurant located on its ground floor for the past 25 years, will remain there through 2018, when it is scheduled to move into a new building to be constructed directly across East Main Street from the inn.

When the owners of Bravo, Bravo successfully obtained a permit in September to construct the new restaurant at 19 East Main St., they told the Planning and Zoning Commission that they still were in negotiations with the Whaler’s Inn to remain and viewed the new building as a backup plan in case they could not reach an agreement.

But the Whaler’s Inn, which is renovating some of its 48 rooms and soon will begin construction on a new, more expansive lobby where Mallove’s of Mystic is now located, has decided it wants to use the Bravo, Bravo space for its own restaurant, according to inn Assistant General Manager Amy Munoz.

Mallove’s, a jewelry store with a 98-year history in the region, is planning to move to the space now occupied by Puffin’s at the corner of Holmes and East Main streets.

While details have not yet been finalized for the new eatery, Munoz said it will allow the inn to grow. She said it would offer an expanded breakfast menu compared to the continental breakfast that is now offered, as well as three meals a day. The restaurant will be open to both guests and the general public.

She said the addition of the restaurant, which would open in the spring of 2019, will offer a more cohesive guest experience.

Munoz described the decision to part ways as an amicable one between the inn and Bravo, Bravo.

“We appreciate the many years shared together at The Whaler’s Inn and are very excited for the evolution of Restaurant Bravo Bravo,” the inn's general manager, Amanda Arling, said in a statement.

The Planning and Zoning Commission meanwhile has approved a special use permit that will allow Bravo, Bravo owner Angela Kanabis to construct a 7,500-square-foot building to house the restaurant and two second-floor apartments.
