Core Plus Taftville branch to close Oct. 12

Norwich – A second business is leaving the Taftville shopping plaza on Norwich Avenue (Route 12), where Starrwood Food Market closed in July.

Core Plus Credit Union has posted a notice on the branch door in the plaza announcing it will close permanently on Oct. 12. The notice directs customers to the credit union’s branch across town at 202 Salem Turnpike — “only 5 miles away,” the notice stated — and to services available online.

When Starrwood announced plans to close, store manager Raj Patel cited numerous problems with the building, including leaking roof, failing cooler system and inability to get the building owner, Central Houston Holding LLC of Mineola, N.Y., to fix problems.

The plaza still houses Gary’s Wine & Spirits package store and a Subway sandwich shop. An employee at the Subway said Wednesday the shop plans to stay in the plaza. The owner of Gary’s Wine & Spirit was not available.
