Mystic — Want a penguin on your license plate?

Mystic Aquarium and the state Department of Motor Vehicles have teamed up to offer a specialty license plate designed to recognize the aquarium and its mission of ocean conservation.

The plates will feature an African penguin and the slogan “Protect our Oceans.”

“This is a very important way to celebrate your fondness for Mystic Aquarium and passion for the ocean environment,” Roz Gilhuly, the aquarium’s senior vice president of external affairs, said in announcing the plate. “We need 400 people to sign up in order to make this dream a reality.”

Those who want a plate can use their existing plate number, including vanity or special number plates, or be assigned a random number for $65. A new vanity or special number plate is $134.

The aquarium needs to meet a pre-sale requirement of 400 license plates for the state to begin production of them. If the 400 license plate pre-sale goal is not met, all fees will be refunded.

Plates may be requested by emailing MarketingInfo@MysticAquarium.org or downloading the registration form from bit.ly/MAPlate. All completed forms should be returned with payment to Mystic Aquarium, ATTN: Special Interest Plates, 55 Coogan Blvd., Mystic, CT 06355. Checks should be made payable to Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles.
