Colchester firm part of $1.5 billion project
Colchester — The green wall builder AgroSci has gone to new heights with its latest project at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood in Florida.
The Hollywood, Fla., project features 41 green walls, along with dozens of plant installations that were part of a $1.5 billion addition to the hotel, which opened just last year. Included in the addition to the world's first guitar-shaped hotel are 36 plant installations totaling 30 feet tall each, as well as an 80-foot-long green wall along the exterior and a 50-foot-long wall inside the spa.
The project is the Colchester-based AgroSci's largest yet and leaves the hotel with one of the highest concentrations of indoor green walls in the world, according to the company.
"I am very proud of what we have accomplished here," Chris Pianta, the company's president and CEO, said in a release. "This project highlights our flexible an innovative design capabilities."
Pianta called the AgroSci installations "a showcase for biophilia," the concept that humans are happier and more productive in an environment that mimics nature.
Plantscapes are dotted throughout the hotel, including the spa, the promenade, executive offices, elevator banks and balconies. The spa installation alone includes more than 500 plants, and living green walls elsewhere contain more than 22,000 additional specimens that naturally cleanse the air and lower temperatures.
The privately held company now boasts hundreds of green walls worldwide, including projects in Manhattan, Brooklyn and South Beach.
The company's move to Colchester from New York state in 2013 was funded by the SouthEastern Connecticut Enterprise Region.
