Stop & Shop, Big Y stores in Conn. reopen delis after expanded Boar's Head recall sparks second closure

Connecticut grocery stores say they've reopened their delis for Wednesday, a day after an expanded recall of Boar's Head products over listeria-causing bacteria prompted their closure.

Tuesday's closures marked the second time in five days that grocery stores opted to close their delis, throw away opened products and deep clean equipment over concerns about tainted Boar's Head products.

Big Y and Stop & Shop both temporarily closed their delis Tuesday, then reopened, the supermarket chains said in statements.

Grocery stores first closed their delis on Friday over concerns about contaminated products. The U.S. Department of Agriculture said at the time that Boar's Head was recalling all of its liverwurst produce "because it may be adulterated with Listeria monocytogenes," the bacteria that causes listeria.

On Tuesday, the company announced it was expanding its recall to include another 7 million pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products, the Department of Agriculture said.

Here's what steps grocery store operators have taken after the latest recall.

    Stop & Shop

Stop & Shop, which operates 88 locations throughout Connecticut, said all of its delis were back open on Wednesday.

The company said it had been informed by Boar's Head that the vendor would be expanding its recall to include additional deli products.

"Stop & Shop proactively took action to help safeguard our customers by temporarily closing our delis again for deep cleaning and sanitization," a statement provided by a company spokesperson said. "Stop & Shop has removed all impacted Boar's Head products from sale."

The grocery chain said it also had thrown out any open deli meats and cheeses that may have come in contact with the items that were recalled — a repeat of the same action it took last week when the recall was first announced.

"As always, ensuring the safety of the products we sell is our highest priority," the statement said.

    Big Y

A spokesperson for Big Y said all of its delis were open for business after a closure Tuesday. The company operates more than 90 stores in Connecticut.

"We did once again closed all delis temporarily to destroy all potentially impacted products, deep clean and sanitize the departments," a Big Y spokesperson said in an email.

By 1 p.m. Tuesday, all of the work was complete and deli departments were back up and running, the spokesperson said.

"The safety and well-being of our customers is our top priority," the emailed statement said. "We have taken steps to break the supply chain including stopping shipments into our stores on any products of concern and sanitizing and deep cleaning all of our kitchen and deli departments again."

    Stew Leonard's

Stew Leonard's is unaffected by the recall. A Stew Leonard's spokesperson said the grocery chain hasn't sold Boar's Head products since 2022.
