NEWMAC honors Coast Guard Academy lacrosse, softball

New London — The Coast Guard Academy was rewarded for a successful spring season with numerous All-New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference selections in lacrosse and softball.

Ray LaForte, who led the men's lacrosse team to its first NEWMAC championship game appearance and a program-record 14 wins, was named the league's coach of the year. Mary Heneberry earned the honor for women's lacrosse after guiding the Bears to their first conference tournament trip and 12 wins overall, topping the victory total from the program's first three years combined.

Seven members of the men's team received all-conference honors. Junior Trey Johnson shared the defensive player of the year award and joined sophomores Ryan Gochar and Riley McNulty on the first team. Juniors Anthony Wyler, Tom Bleifuss, Connor Ellis and sophomore Justin Edwards made the second team.

For the women, Brenna Farrington was named the conference's rookie of the year after scoring a school single-season record 60 goals. The Bears had five All-NEWMAC picks for the first time. Farrington, senior Daria McKenna (a Fitch High School graduate), junior Leah Llewellyn and freshmen Haley Howard and Haley McCue made the second team.

In softball, senior centerfielder Emma Hvozdovich became the first Coast Guard player to earn a spot on the All-NEWMAC first team since 2014, while sophomore first baseman Carly Hattman was a second team selection. The Bears went 22-13 overall, 10-8 in the conference. They qualified for the NEWMAC tournament for the first time in five years.
