East Lyme’s Matt Malcom, a freshman catcher at Eastern Connecticut State Univesity, was named the D3baseball.com New England Rookie of the Year and selected to its All-New England Region second team.

Malcom was named Rookie of the Year by the Little East Conference earlier this month and also made second-team all-conference.

Malcom was one of only two freshmen named to the all-region team, which consisted of 14-player first, second and third teams. Each of the three teams consisted of one player at each position, one utility player, three starting pitchers and one relief pitcher.

Malcom started all 39 games for the Warriors this season. He was their second-leading hitter (.360) and was the leader in several categories, including extra base hits (22), home runs (six), RBI (29) and runs (43).

Eastern finished 23-18 and tied for fourth in the Little East.
