Lathrop takes a ‘dramatic’ 10th club championship at Pequot GC

Jim Lathrop reached a milestone on Sunday.

A Pequot Golf Club member for over 40 years, Lathrop captured his 10th men’s club championship.

Throw in his father’s three club titles and the Lathrop family owns 13 overall.

“I grew up playing at Pequot and I saw some of the names on the board; people when I was 12 and 13 years old took me under their wing and they helped teach me how to play golf and how to act and everything else,” Lathrop said. “To know that I’m up there with them, it’s a nice thing as you look at golf throughout your life.

“It’s nice to win at the place where you grew up.”

Lathrop’s hard-earned victory came with some drama.

Seemingly comfortably in command starting the back nine of Sunday’s third and final round, Lathrop quickly saw his four-stroke lead disappear.

Anthony Davison went on a tear, dunking his wedge shot for an eagle on the 10th hole to cut the deficit in half. He tied the match by sinking a 30-foot birdie putt on No. 13.

Lathrop, who’s from North Stonington, kept his composure, regaining the lead on the next hole before putting the match away.

On the 16th hole, Davison hit his tee shot into the woods and settled for a triple bogey while Lathrop made a par to take a four-stroke advantage and basically clinched the title.

Lathrop finished with a 6-over 216 (71-72-73), beating Davison by three strokes. Davison had rounds of 76, 71 and 73 for a 219. Defending champion Chris Trisciuzzi (75-74-76) and James Stack (78-74-73) tied for third at 225.

“It was dramatic,” Lathrop said. “There’s something about club championships. The unexpected happens and it gets closer toward the end of it, at least in stroke play championships. It was a lot of fun. Chris Trisciuzzi and Tony Davison were both in my threesome and they both played very well. They were a pleasure to play with, as they always are.

“I felt like they made me earn it, especially Tony closing on the back nine. I had to play some really good golf to overcome that.”

Despite dealing with back issues, Lathrop has played well this summer. He turned in some solid rounds at the Connecticut Senior Open last month at Shennecossett Golf Course in Groton.

Lathrop stood at even par during the final round before shooting 5-over on the back nine. He tied for 31st with a 147 (71-76).

“I could have had a really good score,” Lathrop said. “I just mentally ran out of gas. This past Sunday, I didn’t, so that was good.”
