Dr. I: Some ‘signs’ there’s hope for society

Idle Thoughts, while waiting for the Sun at the TD Garden, Aaron Judge’s 400th homer and for someone (anyone) to synchronize the stop lights in downtown New London:

    • Dr. Idle, Dr. I to his close friends, often sees the glass as neither half empty nor half full, but rather as a trick dribble glass that stains your best shirt.

But he dares to be positive to begin these proceedings.

A bunch of awesomely awesome women painted “Go Ivan!” signs last week in honor of U.S. Olympic swimmer Ivan Puskovitch, who began open water swimming as a little kid at Pequot Point Beach in New London.

The signs later adorned the front lawn of Marie Ellzey Rabinovitch — Ivan’s grandmother — who lives in New London.

A tip of the cap to Elaine Maynard-Adams, Sue Ballestrini, Sandy Montanari, Kerrie Mueller, Renee Vogt and Liza Bloom for their thoughtfulness.

Congrats, too, to Puskovitch who finished 19th in the marathon swim event. And remember: Puskovitch trains in Santa Monica, thus giving him home ocean advantage for the 2028 summer games in Los Angeles.

    • Trivia: Name the four Yankees relief pitchers to appear in at least 80 games in a single season. (Answer below)

    • Dr. I staunchly believes Waterford is the most well run town in this corner of the world.

But let’s put the official “whoa, Nellie” on replacing the turf field and tennis courts at the high school until they fix the crumbling, saturated baseball field.

    • Joe Mazzulla should send USA Basketball flowers, chocolates and champagne for single handedly motivating Jayson Tatum and Jaylon Brown for next season.

And while we’re talking hoops: Can we all stop bowing at the altar of LeBron?

In 2024, the 26-year-old Tatum is a better player than 39-year-old LeBron. This is not to compare their overall careers in any way. More of a modern day, blinding flash of obvious. And yet LeBron played all the minutes in France and Tatum played virtually none.

    • Suzyn Waldman should be up for sainthood after enduring three days in the booth with insufferable Craig Carton last weekend.

Did somebody at WFAN have a three martini lunch before deciding Carton deserved a play-by-play chance?

This is Yankees’ play-by-play. Not open mic night.

    • Does anyone else besides Dr. I wince watching Joel Embiid wobble his way up and down the floor?

It got Dr. I thinking that if Fred G. Sanford ever played basketball, he’d be Joel Embiid. (And the ‘G’ does not stand for graceful.)

    • Dr. I’s bid at fixing society: Instead of sending criminals to jail, make them drive through New London between 3 and 5 on weekdays every day for a year.

No, really. The unsynchronized lights, jailbreak from E.B. up the Howard St. International Raceway and the meanderings of random cyclists, walkers, joggers and skateboarders would convince all future criminals it’s just not worth it.

    • Best social media post of the week: “My life coach called me and said I didn’t make the team.”

    • Dr. I’s new goal in life is to be as happy about something — anything — as that woman in the Jardiance commercial.

    • Dr. I nearly spit out his Maxwell House the other day upon reading in The Day that New London officials project 356,700 visitors to the new community center by 2028.

Gloriosky. Will that many people even visit Mohegan Sun?

    • Dr. I is beginning to feel optimistic about the New York Football Giants.

Somebody say something to bring him back to reality.

    • RIP, Eustace “Picky” Lewis. Pick and Dr. I shared many laughs on the Fitch football sidelines during the glory days of the 90s.

    • Here is what keeps Dr. I up at night: Why do we have to call it “mahi mahi?” Why can’t it be just “mahi?” We don’t say “salmon salmon” or “halibut halibut,” right?

It appears to belong to what former Ledyard High principal Lou Gabordi would call the “Department of Redundancy Department.”

    • Trivia answer: Paul Quantrill (86, 2004), Scott Proctor (83, 2006), Tom Gordon (80, 2004) and Boone Logan (80, 2012).

This is the opinion of Day sports columnist Mike DiMauro
