Sun to spend Sunday in Washington

The Connecticut Sun visit the Washington Mystics on Sunday, two days after tying the franchise record for most points in a game.

Sun head coach Curt Miller still didn’t think his team shot the ball well after they mangled the Chicago Sky 110-72 on Friday night.

“I give our kids a lot of credit,” Miller said. “We didn't shoot the ball particularly well, but we had a lot of points off of their turnovers, and we got on the boards when we weren’t making shots and got second-chance points.”

Connecticut (4-0) and Washington (5-2) tip at 3 p.m. (Capital One Arena, NBCSB).

The Sun shot 51.2 percent (42-of-82) against Chicago, the second-most made field goals in team history.

A deep dive into the scorebook illustrates what Miller meant. Connecticut scored 50 points inside the paint on 25 of 41 shooting.

The Sun shot 41.5 percent from the rest of the floor. That included missing 17 of 25 3-pointers. They were shooting a league-leading 44.9 percent of behind the arc before Friday’s game.

Connecticut pillaged Chicago on the boards 49-24 to earn an edge in second-chance points (25-4). It also turned 23 Sky turnovers into 33 points.

“Almost 60 points either came on second-chance (points) or off of their turnovers,” Miller said. “It was a great scoring output for us, but honestly, we didn't shoot it really well, so we had to do some of the other things. … (We) had a great night on the boards.”

Washington has done yeoman’s work given its personnel issues. Elena Delle Donne, the 2015 WNBA MVP, only played 13 minutes due to dehydration in last Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Lynx.

Delle Donne didn’t play during the Mystics' three road games last week, and Ava Wallace of the Washington Post reported Thursday that head coach Mike Thibault said Delle Donne had left the team to return home to meet with doctors.

The Mystics were already without starting forward Emma Meesseman, who is taking the season off to train with Belgium in preparations for the FIBA World Cup in late September. They've also been without guard Taylor Hill, who tore an anterior cruciate ligament last July.

Washington had to fly back from Las Vegas on Saturday after playing until almost 1 that morning. It lost to the Aces, 85-73, the latter’s first win of the season.
