    Sun fall in Dallas, 74-73

Arlington, Texas — The Connecticut Sun set a franchise-record for best start a week ago.

This week, Connecticut has its first two-game losing streak of the season.

Notre Dame rookie Arike Ogunbowale scored 23, including a late go-ahead 3-pointer, as the Dallas Wings held off the Sun 74-73 on Wednesday night in a WNBA game before 4,017 at College Park Center.

Connecticut falls to 9-3, still the WNBA's best record. The Wings are 3-6.

Dallas led by as many as 13 points (58-45) with two minutes, 31 seconds left in the third quarter.

It was the second straight game in which the Sun were outrebounded (33-24), a rarity given it ranks second in that category.

“In the first half, they were getting all the offensive boards and we weren’t boxing them out and doing what we normally do,” Connecticut’s Alyssa Thomas said. “In the second half, we were paying more attention to detail but unfortunately, we weren’t able to close it out.”

Offensive rebounding was something Sun head coach Curt Miller was concerned about leading into the Dallas game because the Wings lead the WNBA in that category. They held a 10-5 edge on Wednesday.

Dallas’ bench also outscored the Sun 22-6.

“I’m proud of our effort in the fourth quarter to fight back from a ten-point deficit,” Miller said. “I thought that they showed a lot of grit. Alyssa Thomas and Jasmine Thomas just played their butts off to put us in a position to potentially send us to overtime and win that game, but we dug ourselves in a hole in that first half and dug ourselves (a hole) going into the fourth.

“We played well in the fourth quarter. We were just a little short.”

Alyssa Thomas scored a career-high 28 points with six rebounds and three steals for the Sun while Jasmine Thomas had 19 points and tied a career-high with 11 assists.

Jonquel Jones had 13 points and six rebounds for Connecticut.

The Wings shot a season-high 43.8 percent from behind the arc, led by Ogunbowale. The fifth pick in April’s draft made 3-of-4 3-pointers.

“I was proud of our effort and especially how we responded to the game in Las Vegas,” Dallas head coach Brian Agler said, referencing last Saturday’s 86-68 loss at the Aces.

“We pushed in transition, and when we didn’t have it, we ran our stuff and stayed organized. Our spacing was much better and we made some really good passes. It’s been a while since we had some distance between our assists and our turnovers.”

Isabelle Harrison (13 points) was the only other Dallas player to score in double figures on Wednesday.

The Sun opened the fourth quarter with a 15-2 run to take the lead. Alyssa Thomas turned a layup into a three-point play and made the first of two free throws over a minute later to give Connecticut a 66-63 lead with 4 minutes, 46 seconds remaining.

Ogunbowale banked in a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:23 left to give Dallas a 72-70 lead.
