Mohegan — Natisha Hiedeman is glad to be back with the Connecticut Sun and have a home where she and Quavo can stay for a few months.

Hiedeman, a rookie point guard from Marquette, is back with the Connecticut Sun after being waived in May, signed by the Atlanta Dream in June, and both waived by Atlanta and resigned by the Sun last week.

Quavo is Hiedeman’s roommate and beloved hamster, who has been bouncing around the country with her since April.

Hiedeman and Connecticut hope to break a four-game losing streak at Atlanta on Wednesday morning (11, State Farm Arena, NESN).

“I’ve been living out of a suitcase out of college,” Hiedeman said. “I was here, I went on vacation with my family, then I went to Atlanta, and now I’m back here.

“It’s been a lot of back and forth. Each place I have been has been a learning experience and another opportunity. It’s been a ride but I’m enjoying it. I’m just taking every opportunity and just running with it.”

Hiedeman was the unanimous choice for 2018-19 Big East Player of the Year, as chosen by its coaches. She averaged 17.6 points, 6.1 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2 steals her senior year and set the program record with 301 3-pointers.

Hiedeman wanted a pet while she was in college, so she got Quavo.

“He’s been alive for two years now, so he’s going strong,” Hiedeman beamed as she brought up video of him on her Instagram account. “He’s the best hamster alive. He’s really the GOAT. He’s just literally the best hamster ever. I don’t know how a hamster could be so cool, but he’s the dopest hamster ever.”

The Minnesota Lynx selected Hiedeman in the second round (18th overall) in the WNBA Draft on April 10 as part of a trade agreement they had made with Connecticut. The Sun sent point guard Lexie Brown, their 2018 first-round pick (ninth overall), to the Lynx in exchange for Hiedeman.

Hiedeman was in Connecticut’s training camp until May 23 when teams had to set their regular-season rosters. She was the Sun’s last cut.

“I was honestly thinking, ‘I don’t know what I’m going to do all summer,’” Hiedeman said. “‘Do I have to get a job now?’”

Hiedeman wasn’t out of work for too long as Atlanta signed her on June 19 to fill a temporarily vacancy when guard Alex Bentley left to play for Belarus at last month’s FIBA EuroBasket championships.

The Dream waived Hiedeman and reactivated Bentley on July 1.

Connecticut took a big hit when reserve guard Layshia Clarendon suffered a season-ending ankle injury at practice on June 19. Clarendon, a 2017 All-Star who won gold playing for USA Basketball at last September’s FIBA World Cup, was the Sun’s sixth-woman and one of their better defenders.

The Sun claimed Hiedeman off waivers on July 3 and cut rookie forward Bridget Carleton.

“I’m happy to be playing basketball and be back with the team,” Hiedeman said. “(I’ve learned) it’s a physical game, and you’ve got to be strong.

“Me being undersized (5-foot-7, 125 pounds), I’ve got to really try to use my strength. You have to compete. You have to compete with everything you do. You’ve got to hold your own.”

The Sun (9-5) had won seven in a row prior to their current skid. Atlanta (3-10) is the last team they beat. They led by as many as 22 points on June 21 and withstood a fiery fourth-quarter Dream comeback for an 86-76 win.
