Sun complete road trip with 94-84 win over Liberty

New York — Courtney Williams had 26 points, six rebounds and five assists as the Connecticut Sun finished a three-game road trip with a 94-84 WNBA victory over the New York Liberty on Friday night.

The Sun (22-9) finished 2-1 on the trip that included a pair of games on the West Coast, and they return home at 7 p.m. Wednesday to face the Dallas Wings at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Connecticut also assured itself at least a top-three finish and a first-round bye in the playoffs, although the Sun are still chasing the Washington Mystics (22-8) for the overall No. 1 seed.

The top two teams earn a bye into the best-of-five semifinals while the rest of the eight-team playoff field will play in a single-elimination format during the first and second rounds.

Alyssa Thomas added 20 points and nine rebounds for the Sun, including the 2,000th point of her WNBA career in the fourth quarter, while Jonquel Jones finished with 12 points and Jasmine Thomas 10 points and seven assists. Brionna Jones came off the bench to score a season-high nine.

Connecticut shot 50.7 from the field (34-for-67), including 53.8 percent (7-for-13) from beyond the 3-point line.

It was the 21st game of the season in double figures for Williams, who went 10-for-19 from the field — 2-for-2 from 3-point range — and 4-for-4 from the foul line.

The Sun led 50-41 at halftime before New York went on a 21-7 run and led 61-57 with 2:20 left in the third quarter. Connecticut responded with a 10-0 run to end the quarter and never trailed again.

Marine Johannes came off the bench to lead New York (9-22) with 21 points and Kia Nurse, the ex-UConn All-American added 15 for the Liberty (9-22), which lost all three games to Connecticut this season. New York also rested another former UConn great, center Tina Charles.
