Four Sun earn WNBA All-Defensive honors

Briann January and Jonquel Jones were among four Connecticut Sun players who earned all WNBA All-Defensive First or Second Team honors, the league announced Sunday.

It’s the first time that a team had four players earn Defensive Team honors in the same season.

January and Jones were both awarded first team honors, as selected by a 49-member panel of sportswriters and broadcasters. It is the seventh time that January, a guard, has earned Defensive team honors and her fifth first-team award. It’s the second time Jones made first team.

Sylvia Fowles of the Minnesota Lynx, who also earned Defensive Player of the Year honors, Brittany Sykes of the Los Angeles Sparks and Brianna Turner of the Phoenix Mercury round out the first team.

Sun center Brionna Jones and guard Jasmine Thomas were both chosen to the second team. It’s the fifth time Thomas has made either team (she’s been first-team three times) and a first for Jones.

Ariel Atkins of the Washington Mystics, Brittney Griner of the Phoenix Mercury and Breanna Stewart of the Seattle Storm also made second team.

Connecticut held opponents under 70 points in 18 of its 32 regular-season games for a league-leading average of 69.9 points per game. It’s the top seed in the WNBA playoffs and will play the sixth-seeded Chicago Sky in the best-of-five semifinals. Games 1 and 2 are at Mohegan Sun Arena on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively, and both start at 8 p.m.
