Salem man gets six years in prison after baby daughter dies of fentanyl overdose

A judge in New London on Thursday sentenced a Salem man whose 1-year-old daughter died of a fentanyl overdose in 2022 to six years in prison.

Travis J. Schubel, 39, had previously pleaded guilty to charges of second-degree manslaughter and risk of injury to a minor in connection with the Feb. 8, 2022 death of his daughter. He additionally pleaded guilty on Thursday to driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The infant was found unresponsive in “deplorable conditions” at Schubel’s home, where police said they found open containers of alcohol, bags of fentanyl, methadone, needles and other drug paraphernalia.

The child’s death was ruled a homicide caused by “acute intoxication due to fentanyl and xylazine.” Xylazine is a tranquilizer sometimes mixed with fentanyl to lengthen the euphoric effects of the drugs. Police suspect the child was exposed to the drugs while in the home.

Ricki J. Thomas, the child’s mother who also lived in the home, remains held on a $750,000 bond and faces similar charges to Schubel. She is due to appear Sept. 12 in New London Superior Court.

Schubel has multiple convictions in seven previous cases between 2017 and 2019 including assault, drug possession, driving under the influence, violation of probation and other charges. Until his conviction in this case, his longest previous prison sentence was one year.
