New London man faces 5 years in Griswold home invasion case
Jonathan Brand, who posed as a law enforcement officer, entered a Griswold hotel room and assaulted a woman, is expected to be sentenced to five years in prison and five years of probation.
Brand, formerly of 150 Cove View Road, pleaded guilty to second-degree burglary, third-degree assault and admitted to two counts of violation of probation during his appearance Tuesday in New London Superior Court. He is due to be sentenced Jan. 22.
The proposed sentence was the result of a plea agreement that drops more serious charges of home invasion and first-degree strangulation related to a Feb. 2, 2024, break-in at the Comfort Inn at 375 Voluntown Road.
State police said Brand pounded on the door of a co-worker while announcing himself as a police officer, pushed through the partially opened door and attacked a woman.
During the booking process, state police said they found four fraudulent identification badges in Brand’s wallet. Brand, who has previous convictions for second-degree harassment, failure to appear in court and tampering with airport equipment, remains held on $500,000 bond.
One of Brand’s previous charges in 2016 was related to his arrest at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, where police said he interfered with Life Star helicopter’s attempt to take off with a patient.
