Do they still call my part of New London the Sixth District? The neighborhood down by the rotted property that used to be famous as the Lighthouse Inn? Well, whatever: Life for those of us who live there has improved greatly since Ocean Food Mart opened at the corner of Montauk and Lower. It's the spot previously occupied by The Little Store on the Corner, which was a noble idea but with horribly erratic hours that sorta confounded the idea of "convenience." Ocean Food Mart — a sibling operation of Ocean Liquors across the street — has a reliably consistent schedule (8 a.m.-9 p.m. Mon.-Sat. and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sun.). They also have all "hurricane's comin'" essentials from household items to snacks. There's also a deli counter with soups, salads, party planners, meat and cheeses by the pound, and damned competitive grinders featuring all the expected faves as well as a home-run quality hummus sub.
