Anymore, we have to work hard to succeed at that “make lemonade out of lemons” cliché. For one thing, the “lemons” presented by the world right now are largely such that, no matter how much sugar we impart to the mix, most of the “lemonade” is still pretty mediocre.

However, if we are to continue torturing this metaphor, let’s just say that the timelessly great folk-pop act Indigo Girls, who perform Saturday in New London’s Garde Arts Center, have come up with a true winner in contemporary lemonade recipes. It’s called “Look Long,” an album they released last spring, and which tackles all manners of issues — personal, societal, cultural and political — with wit, tenderness, righteous activism and wisdom. And it’s rendered with those wonderful harmonies and gifted songcraft.

Also important to note? The duo is one of those magical partnerships that stays fresh, always curious and engaged, and adventurous.
