    Crowded House plays Foxwoods

    Crowded House (neilfinn.com_

You don’t have to put a gun to my head for me to name my favorite all-time band.

It’s Crowded House. There’s a strong argument to be made by me that CH leader Neil Finn is the greatest pop songwriter of his and other generations.

Of course, the Crowded House that exists today — the one headlining the Premier Theater at Foxwoods Friday — is very different than the original Crowded House.

It’s been 40 years since “Don’t Dream It’s Over” first haunted the ears of the world. Gone are drummer Paul Hester (suicide) and longtime mainstay Mark Hart (jettisoned), and Finn and original bassist Nick Seymour have been joined by Finn’s sons Liam and Elroy and the band’s original producer Mitchell Froom.

This unit has released two albums, “Dreamers Are Waiting” and the recent “Gravity Stairs,” neither of which resonate with me very much. And that’s OK.

Neil Finn has his sons with him and Mitchell and Nick, and good for them; it’s not a bad way for Dad to segue into the backside of an immortal career. The sound of the new recordings demonstrate that the personalities of the musicians and the elder Finn’s creative efforts have of course resulted in a new era.

The harmonies and the songs and the production have a sedate but pleasant quality, like sinking into a familiar and comfortable couch while the mellow autumn sunlight illuminates dust motes and you smile — and jump off the couch and yell, “Neil! On Friday you gotta play ‘Hole in the River’ and ‘Walking On the Spot’ and ‘I Feel Possessed’ and ‘Love This Life’ and ‘I May Be Late’ because I’m old and I’ll never hear you play them again!”

Crowded House, 8 p.m. Friday, Premier Theater, Foxwoods; $61 and up; foxwoods.com.
