Belarusian poet headlines Arts Cafe Mystic’s inagural fall event
Celebrating three decades of poetry, literature and music, the Arts Café Mystic presents the inaugural program of its 31st season Sept. 27 in Stonington’s La Grua Center.
Headlining is the Belarusian poet Valzhyna Mort, winner of such prestigious accolades as Slovenia’s Crystal of Valencia Award, Germany’s Burda Poetry Prize, a Lannan Foundation Literary Fellowship and Poetry Magazine’s Bess Hokin Prize.
Mort’s collections include “Factory of Tears,” “Collected Body” and “Music for the Dead and Resurrected.” A professor at Cornell, she’s also had work published in Best American Poetry, New Letters, Poetry, The New Yorker and Poetry International. In addition to themes of loneliness, humanity’s puzzling relationships with the Divine and the dynamics of family, Mort is a champion for Belarusian culture and its disappearing language.
The evening’s Opening Voice is Abbott Cutler, a poet from Shelburne Falls, Mass. Cutler has authored four collections, and his work has appeared in Ploughshares, Orion Magazine and Blue Sofa Review.
New London’s popular Americana band The Rivergods provide music.
Other Arts Café Mystic autumn events are Oct. 25 with Colin Channer and Nov. 22 with Margaret Gibson.
Doors are 6:30 p.m. and the presentation starts at 7 p.m. The La Grua Center is located at 32 Water St., Stonington. Tickets are $20, $40 for all three fall Arts Café Mystic events. For information, visit artscafemystic.com.
