The forever (Beach) boys of summer

Mike Love of the Beach Boys (Mike Love Facebook)

By now, I’ve written more advance features, weekend guide best bets, interviews-with, reviews-of, blogs-concerning and think pieces about the Beach Boys than there are grains of sand on the beaches the band DIDN’T surf in SoCal — back when they were young and SANG about surfing.

Not sure what else there is to say other than, when the Final Bible of Rock goes to press, the editors will probably have to say the Beach Boys were the greatest American band.

By now, over 60 musicians have been part of Beach Boys touring ensembles, and only founding vocalist Mike Love and long, long, longtime member Bruce Johnston are still around as the band continues to chug along in another of their “endless summer”variation tours. In fact, they appear Friday at the Mohegan Sun Arena.

Sadly, Brian Wilson, the genius behind the music that MADE them America’s greatest band, has been diagnosed with dementia and is no longer capable of composing or performing. Though Wilson toured extensively in the aughts, it was usually in a solo guise.

Love and Johnston will have assembled an excellent group and will spin a setlist favoring classic surf/cars songs and plenty of “My Three Sons”-era nostalgia.

The Beach Boys, 7:30 p.m. Friday, Mohegan Sun Arena; $59 and up; mohegansun.com.
