The Day’s ‘Those People’ doc to air soon in New London, Westbrook
“Those People: How a Talent Show Turned Pain Into Healing,” the acclaimed 2021 documentary directed by The Day’s Peter Huoppi and produced by Huoppi and Chris Goodwin, a former New London city councilor and co-founder of the New London Talent Show, will be screened locally over the next few weeks.
The film is an account of how a group of young activists and their mentors, inspired by the tragedy and volatile reaction to a racially motivated murder of a young New London man, ultimately brought the community together through the ongoing annual talent show that ultimately ran for 10 years.
The Day has joined with Green Planet Films, a Stonington nonprofit distributor of nature, environment and human ecology films, in an agreement that will present several screenings of “Those People” in the coming weeks. At 5 p.m. on Nov. 14, the New London Public Library hosts a viewing of the film along with a Q&A session featuring Huoppi and Goodwin. The library is located at 63 Huntington St., and the event is free; visit plnl.org.
“Those People” is also part of a new series of one-week film residencies at Westbrook Cinemas in partnership with Green Planet. “Those People” will show in a Westbrook theater Nov. 15-21.
The other Green Planet movies scheduled for Westbrook include “Atomic Hope”Nov. 9-15. It concerns a tiny global movement of unpopular pro-nuclear activists who strongly believe nuclear power is required in order to decarbonize our energy systems.
“Art & Pep,” about civil rights leaders Art Johnston and Pepe Peña, whose life and love are forces behind LGBTQ+ equality in the heart of the country, will play Nov. 22-28.
And “Jaguar People,” screening Dec. 6-12, details how China’s infusions of hundreds of billions of dollars into South American infrastructure is causing jaguars to disappear from the continent’s most protected rainforests.
