Founder and artistic director of Cities of Peace, Ellen Frank, Ph.D.'s visit to Jerusalem in 1999 inspired her to produce the first painting in the series and to visualize the creation of other works representing additional cities that have survived strife. The series directs action through hopeful energy by celebrating the best of the human spirit, transforming anguish into beauty.

Paintings by Tom Root

Paintings by Tom Root;

Art Exhibits/Openings

Cooper & Smith Gallery, 10 Main Street, Essex, CT , 06426

The Cooper & Smith Gallery is proud to feature "Paintings by Tom Root." Tom Root began his career desiring to become part of a contemporary figurative revival. He loved historic portraiture but disliked what he saw as formulaic in commercial portraiture. He set out to reestablish the connection between contemporary portraiture and fine art. Toward this goal, Tom works in the traditional style, painting from life. The immediacy of these portrait sessions results in paintings that capture a physical likeness animated by a rich inner life. An Alabama native, Tom studied drawing and painting at Lyme Academy of Fine Arts in Old Lyme, Connecticut, under Aaron Shikler N.A. and Deane G. Keller, and at Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida. A professional figure and portrait painter for over thirty-five years, Tom has work in private and public collections across the country, including the New Britain Museum of American Art (New Britain, CT) and the Tennessee State Museum (Nashville, TN). Gallery hours, Thu – Mon, 10:30 – 5pm and by appointment. 10 Main Street, Essex.
