Former SI editor Christ Stone talks about Walter Iooss at Lyman Allyn Thursday

Mystic native Chris Stone spent almost three decades at Sports Illustrated, several of them as a visionary editor-in-chief of the publication. He's the perfect guy, then, to drop by tonight at New London's Lyman Allyn Art Museum and share some anecdotes about the magazine's iconic photographer Walter Iooss, Jr., whose work is explored in their enthralling "LEGENDS: The Sports Photography of Walter Iooss" exhibition.

Stone, the son of former Day editorial writer Greg Stone, is an entertaining and humble speaker, the sort of guy who considered himself lucky to helm one of the country's most popular magazines — in spite of having abstolutely earned the gig and adroitly maintaining a tradition of excellence while incorporating change to keep SI competetive in the new era of social media. The event kicks off with a reception at the museum begins at 5:30 p.m., and Stone speaks at 6 p.m.

Chris Stone, 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Lyman Allyn Art Museum, 625 Williams St., New London; $10 members, $15 nonmembers, $3 students with IDs; RSVP required, 860-443-2545, ext. 2129.
