Norwich native John Cotter reads Saturday from Merrill House

It's only 20 miles from Norwich to Stonington, but John Cotter decided not to take the "as the crow flies" route. Cotter, a Norwich native, is January's Writer-in-Residence at the James Merrill House in the Borough, but he currently lives in Denver and has traveled widely in his experiences as a writer and professor.

We're glad he's back in the neighborhood although, with COVID precautions, the only way to experience his 5 p.m. Saturday reading is virtually through the Merrill House Facebook page or YouTube channel.

No matter: it will be well worth your time. Cotter, author of the novel "Under the Small Lights" and the soon-to-be-published memoir "Losing Music," is a spectacularly gifted, kind and thoughtful writer. As a stylist, the scope, narrative grace and natural curiosity about his life and art are delivered through the prism of his own experiences and a distinctive, ongoing malady.

To learn more about Cotter, see an interview in Friday's Daybreak section.
