March madness at Mystic Irish Parade

Mystic Irish Parade. 10th year. This Sunday. Let's break it down:

    • More than 1,800 marchers will wend their way through downtown Mystic.

    • Let the music play: At least 10 Celtic pipe bands will be getting, ahem, Irish jiggy with it. That means more of those kinds of bands will be performing here than in any other parade in Connecticut.

    • So you know there'll be Irish music and step dancing - maybe some folks speaking with a brogue - but there's more, too. You'll see antique cars, firetrucks, high school bands, grand marshal/Groton City Police Chief Michael Crowley, and Steve Elci and Friends (giving a Kidsploration performance for younguns).

    • Also during the parade, you'll hear U2! Ah, no, not the real thing, but a crack tribute group called the Joshua Tree Band.

Mystic Irish Parade, 1 p.m. Sunday, starts Mystic Seaport, travels down Greenmanville, Mistuxet, Broadway, and Main Streets, ends at Mystic Art Association, 9 Water St.; mysticirishparade.org.
