      Event Description:
Studio 33 Art & Frame Gallery is pleased to present the Three Friends Exhibit September 9, 2022 – November 5, 2022, featuring the maritime paintings of local artists Robert J. Hauschild 1941-2012, Phil Cutting 1934-2017, and John McGuire. We welcome all visitors to the CT Maritime Heritage Festival on Sat. Sep 9, 22 through the weekend, to our maritime themed exhibit. Robert J. Hauschild’s father was a commercial artist, as a child he was given full access to paint, paper, and brushes, his favorite watercolor and acrylic paintings would include what he knew-his early playground along a river with ferries, tugs, and lighthouses. Hallmarks of his paintings are hard edges, dramatic shadows and stark contrasts between dark and light falling upon the surface of the canvas. His work has been described as surreal and mystical in style and subject. His watercolor paintings have been reproduced on four New London Main Street posters. Phil Cutting, known as “Capt. Phil” professionally, was a radio personality and marine reporter. He loved anything to do with Long Island Sound, in his retirement he volunteered at Mystic Seaport and became an avid watercolor and pastel artist. John McGuire paints watercolor landscapes and seascapes based out of the New London – Waterford, CT area, Studio 33 carries his beautiful greeting cards featuring his watercolors of local scenes as well!

An Evening with Author Chris Wisniewski

      Event Description:
Join us on September 10th from 5-6 PM for an hour of local history with Author, Chris Wisniewski at the Hygienic Art Gallery. She will read sections from her book, “The Hurricane of 1938.”

In September 1938, a massive hurricane with winds up to 120 mph roared into New England without warning. It washed away entire seaside communities at Watch Hill, Misquamicut, and at Ocean Beach in New London. In the middle of the storm, Bank Street in New London caught on fire while nearby large ships were tossed up on the railroad tracks by the wind and waves of the storm surge that raced up the Thames River. Within a few hours, the whole area was devastated.

In 2013, Chris Wisniewski partnered with The Norwich Bulletin on a book, The Hurricane of 1938: Memories of the Storm of the Century. It features personal accounts from over 65 residents of Southeastern Conn. and over 60 photographs, many never published before. The ‘38 Hurricane still remains the most destructive storm in New England history. Now, on the 84th anniversary of the storm, come experience the storm through the words of the people who lived through it..
