      Event Description:
Studio 33 Art & Frame Gallery is pleased to present the Three Friends Exhibit September 9, 2022 – November 5, 2022, featuring the maritime paintings of local artists Robert J. Hauschild 1941-2012, Phil Cutting 1934-2017, and John McGuire. We welcome all visitors to the CT Maritime Heritage Festival on Sat. Sep 9, 22 through the weekend, to our maritime themed exhibit. Robert J. Hauschild’s father was a commercial artist, as a child he was given full access to paint, paper, and brushes, his favorite watercolor and acrylic paintings would include what he knew-his early playground along a river with ferries, tugs, and lighthouses. Hallmarks of his paintings are hard edges, dramatic shadows and stark contrasts between dark and light falling upon the surface of the canvas. His work has been described as surreal and mystical in style and subject. His watercolor paintings have been reproduced on four New London Main Street posters. Phil Cutting, known as “Capt. Phil” professionally, was a radio personality and marine reporter. He loved anything to do with Long Island Sound, in his retirement he volunteered at Mystic Seaport and became an avid watercolor and pastel artist. John McGuire paints watercolor landscapes and seascapes based out of the New London – Waterford, CT area, Studio 33 carries his beautiful greeting cards featuring his watercolors of local scenes as well!

      Event Date:
      2022-10-16

      Event Time:
      7:00 pm

      Event Description:
The New London Drone Orchestra will perform in a concert hall for the very first time in an event that will feature premieres of two new works written just for us, “visible mending (programme)” by conceptual artist and performance poet Jim Whitten and “Waves & Fish” by orchestra member Tim Wolf. We will be joined by four musicians from northwestern Connecticut and western Massachusetts: Andy Allen on saxophone, Nat Baldwin on banjo and ukulele, Tom Crean on guitar, and Karl Warner on harmonium.

We are a radically inclusive ensemble that welcomes both well established musicians and folks who love music with less experience. We do not require members to know how to read Western notation, which means we find creative ways to guide the group’s improvisation. We will be using two graphic scores and one text score in this performance, and for the first time ever, the audience will be able to see what the musicians are looking at because we’ll be projecting it on a giant screen over the stage. This should be an immersive experience.

A generous grant from the City of New London means we’ll have enhanced production values while keeping the cost of admission free. Someone at one of our concerts told us we “made her forget her to-do list.” Please join us for just that!

      Event Description:
In this beginner-friendly class taught by instructor Michaela Abate, we will be learning and experimenting with the cyanotype process. – the 180 year old print making method that uses UV light to expose images producing your very own print in a distinctive dark greenish-blue. The word cyan comes from Greek, meaning “dark blue substance.”

Be as creative as you want or stick to tradition

      Please Bring:

Design components – Leaves, ferns, flowers, etc. (Pressed and dried is easiest to work with but is not necessary) Photo negatives/transparencies, objects to silhouette, etc.

Frame – Please bring a frame with glass large enough to cover your composition. The glass will be used to hold the composition in place as it exposes it so that the prints come out crisp.

(Optional)- Any clothes, fabrics, or special papers you wish to print on.

All other materials will be supplied

This class is intended for students ages 15+.

This one-session class is 3-5 PM at Spark Makerspace 7 Union St. New London, CT

      Event Description:
On October 15th and October 16th the Connecticut Gilbert & Sullivan Society will be performing a fully staged production of H.M.S. Pinafore.

One of the most well-known and beloved of the Gilbert & Sullivan operettas, H.M.S. Pinafore is filled with comic characters, a fun story line and some great and memorable songs. Like other Gilbert and Sullivan works, Pinafore pokes fun at British society and the social mores of the day.

The H.M.S. Pinafore is under the command of Captain Corcoran. On board with him is Josephine, his beautiful young daughter. Among the ship’s crew members is Ralph Rackstraw, foremast hand. Ralph was smitten with Josephine from the moment he first saw her (that is frequently the case in these shows). But he knows he dare not tell her how he feels. She is his captain’s daughter and her position in British society much higher than his. He knows that she would never allow herself to marry a common sailor. Unbeknownst to Ralph, Josephine is secretly smitten with him too, but she dare not say so for he is but a common sailor. And besides, her father has promised her hand in marriage to Sir Joseph Porter, K.C.B, First Lord of the Admiralty and she has promised her father that she will honor his wishes.

But that will soon change as Little Buttercup reveals to all a secret she has kept hidden regarding a mistake that she made, in her baby farming days, many years ago

      Event Description:
The New London Drone Orchestra is celebrating its relaunch by premiering two new pieces: “visible mending (programme)” by conceptual artist and performance poet Jim Whitten, which we will debut with guest musicians Andy Allen, Nat Baldwin, Tom Crean, and Karl Warner, and “Waves & Fish” by NLDO stalwart Tim Wolf. We will also bring back a recent favorite by NLDO director Kip Wilson, which we’ll do in a brand-new way. For the first time ever, the audience will be privy to the graphic scores and recipe-like instructions we play from, which will be projected on a giant screen over the stage. The group has been bringing together experienced musicians and music lovers who are enjoying their first experiences playing with a group to improvise sustained, meditative, layered, gradually evolving, timeless sound since 2017.

Many thanks to the Southeastern Connecticut Cultural Coalition and Furnace Records for their generous support of this event, which is free and open to the public.
