New works by Federico Rosa on view at Expressiones

New works by artist Federico Rosa are featured at Expressiones Gallery at 84 Bank St., New London.

The title of this exhibition is “Sisyphus,” a reference to the Greek myth of Sisyphus – the tale of a king who, for cheating death, enraged the gods, and Hades punished him by condemning Sisyphus to push a boulder up a mountain only for it to roll back down again for all eternity.

“Sisyphean” has invaded our language as an idiom for a difficult, yet pointless task. Albert Camus, the French existentialist, used the myth as a metaphor for the human predicament: if our existence is meaningless, how do we make sense of it?

These works by Rosa, previously known in his home country of Honduras and his base of Germany for works of a highly political thematic, has managed, in the context of his art residency at Expressiones, to produce works that synthesize his languages of expression, from abstract material experiments, to sculpture, as well as figurative elements, into a coherent, articulate body of work.

The exhibition runs through Saturday from 2 to 6 p.m. Afterwards, it can be viewed by appointment. Visit expressiones.org.

Comment threads are monitored for 48 hours after publication and then closed.
