Art by Scott Gordley featured in Stonington exhibition
Stonington Architect Michael McKinley is sharing his Stonington Borough studio walls with longtime friend and local painter Scott Gordley.
Gordley, a Pawcatuck resident, is showing his recent work, including a couple of portraits that will capture the attention of Stonington locals. Gordley painted a portrait of Charlie Holland sitting at Milagro’s bar. Holland, who turned 99 on the evening of the gallery opening, is a locally famous musician and fixture in the Borough. Another iconic portrait is of Frankie Keane, the owner Frankie’s newsstand, the predecessor of the current day Tom’s newsstand.
Gordley, a professor emeritus at Ringling College of Art & Design in Sarasota, Fla., was a former faculty member and administrator at Mitchell College in New London. For the past 30 years, he has been commissioned to paint the portraits of the United States Coast Guard Academy superintendents. His illustrations of luminaries such as Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and Madonna have appeared in publications such as Esquire and Time.
Gordley is also known in the local music scene as a jazz and blues saxophone player with Johnny and the East Coast Rockers.
McKinley has been in the Borough for more than three decades. His gallery-style studio has become a tourist attraction due to its sign that reads “Architect Michael McKinley and Associates – Marriage Counseling.” It’s a humorous reference to the art and challenges of residential architecture.
Gallery viewings are by appointment only. Contact Gordley to schedule a time to view his paintings by emailing scottgordley@hotmail.com.
