    Trip tip: The Holy Donut

Doughnuts made out of potatoes? Could they actually be good? According to my taste buds, yes, they are. And by the looks of the long line winding out of Portland, Maine’s The Holy Donut, many others think the same. Since 2012, The Holy Donut has been offering up a different kind of doughnut — one that uses mashed potatoes in its recipe. The addition of spuds to its doughnuts (which boast gourmet flavors such as chai-glazed, maple-bacon and cinnamon sugar) creates a grounding heartiness — one that will fix any soul-food craving. I particularly enjoyed the dark chocolate-sea salt flavor. It’s made like an old-fashioned chocolate, but it’s far more complex, both in texture and taste, leaving me satisfied but also not feeling like a sugar glutton. If you happen to be in Portland this summer, or anytime for that matter, make it a point to stop by The Holy Donut. Try to get there early, though, to beat the rush. The Holy Donut is located at 194 Park Ave., Portland, Maine.
