    H.S. roundup: Fitch/Ledyard field hockey team beats McMahon 2-0

    Norwalk — Fitch/Ledyard continued its recent string of good play with a 2-0 nonleague field hockey victory over McMahon on Saturday.

    The cooperative program, 6-5 overall, has won five of its last six games.

    The Falcons scored both of their goals in the second half, talking a 1-0 lead on Maci Silvia's goal and adding some insurance on a goal by Lily Johnson.

    Goalie Erin Ritter posted her second shutout by stopping seven shots.

    Boys' soccer

    • Jack Woodruff had a goal and an assist to lift Ledyard to a 4-0 nonleague victory over Wheeler in the annual Pink Out game between the two schools. Woodruff, Nate McCracken and Ben Gordon scored in the first half to give the Colonels (6-4) and 3-0 lead and Chris Charette scored off a feed from Woodruff just a minute into the second half. Ian Kamperschroer, Fabian May and Berkely Wachtmann also had assists for Ledyard, which held a 28-10 shots edge. Bowen Baker stopped 11 shots for the Lions (4-8), who had a three-game winning streak snapped.

    Ledyard coach Bill Glenney said the four teams involved in the Pink Out doubleheader (the Ledyard girls beat Wheeler 7-0) raised $1,000 that will be donated to Sloan Kettering and the American Cancer Society.

    • Fitch used a pair of second-half goals to put away St. Bernard 3-0 in a nonleague game. After Manish Rane-Castrodad gave the Falcons (6-5-1) a 1-0 halftime lead, Andrew Kerst and Keshav Garcia-Patel scored in the second half. Weston Jacey earned the shutout with seven saves while Martin Arvidson made 13 saves in goal for the Saints (2-8-1).

    Girls' soccer

    • Kayla Park had a goal and an assist to lead Norwich Free Academy to a 3-0 nonleague win over Old Saybrook. Julie Hogan and Cassidy White also scored goals for the Wildcats (7-3) while Jillian Brunelli and Natalia Hogan added assists.

    • Woodstock Academy broke a scoreless tie with 11 minutes remaining to beat Waterford 1-0 in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division II game on Friday. Skylar Henry made 11 saves in goal for the Lancers (4-7, 1-6).

    Volleyball

    • East Hampton defeated Old Lyme 25-11, 25-8 and 25-12 in the Shoreline Conference. Natalie Golden had four digs and Una Barrett five assists for the Warriors (1-10).

    Girls' cross country

    • Old Lyme placed its top five runners in the top 70 to finish third in the unseeded race at the Wickham Park Invite in Manchester. The Wildcats finished with 261 points, trailing only Nonnewaug (233) and Shoreline Conference rival Cromwell (240). Anna Sather led Old Lyme in 47th place (22:51) followed by Faith Caulkins (59th, 23:17), Mackenzie Blue (64th, 23:27), Emma Pennie (67th, 23:32) and Lilah McAndrew (70th, 23:34.)

    Also in the unseeded race, Ledyard was 25th with 563 points and Fitch was 29th with 683. Ledyard had three runners finish in the top 100 — Jade Dessaint (61st, 23:22), Averie Greeley (62nd, 23:22) and Ally Tran (81st, 23:46) — while Fitch's Julia Adrian was the top local finisher in 33rd (22:10).

    In the seeded race, St. Bernard finished 23rd with 531 and had a pair of runners place among the top 100, Christina McCaffrey in 54th (22:14) and freshman Serena Britner in 78th (22:58).

    • Freshman Mary Madaus placed second overall and led Williams School to a second-place team finish at the MacDuffie Invitational in Granby, Mass. Madaus finished the 5K course in 22:04 and was followed by Grace Cassineri in fourth (24:25), Anna Terry in 11th (25:59), Katie Burzin in 13th (26:08) and Carly Straub in 18th (27:52).

    Boys' cross country

    • East Lyme's Sam Whittaker was the top local finisher in the seeded race at the Wickham Invite in Manchester, placing ninth overall in 17:10 and leading the Vikings to a 15th-place finish in the team standings with 366 points. Ledyard was 22nd (536) and Fitch was 25th (566).

    East Lyme had three other runners finish in the top 100 — Ryan McCauley (62nd, 18:28), Noah Barnhart (74th, 18:39) and Elijah Montleon (90th, 18:50) — whle Ledyard's Zak King was 14th (17:15), Fitch's Tom Readett was 63rd (18:28), Ledyard's Jacob Money was 66th (18:31) and Fitch's Ian Poe was 84th (18:47).

    In the unseeded race, Wheeler's Teddy Nosiku was the top local finisher in 51st place (18:47) while Old Lyme finished 10th as a team (433 points) and Waterford was 14th (465). Old Lyme's Will Barrett (53rd, 18:49), Nick Myers (72nd, 19:04) and Mike Kolesnik (97th,19:22) also finished among the top 100 as did Waterford's Sam Lenes (80th, 19:11) and Eric Zane (82nd, 19:12), New London's John Mateo (84th, 19:13) and St. Bernard's Sam Davis (90th, 19:15).

    • Williams placed second at the MacDuffie Invite, led by the runnerup finish of senior Colin Madaus, who finished in 18:38. Also scoring for the Blues were Hartmut Doerwaldt in seventh (20:10), Philip Knowlton in 10th (20:44), Colin Ladd in 11th (21:15) and Adam Mortenson in 13th (21:26).
