Waterford routs Avon 90-67 in CIAC Division III boys' basketball final
Mohegan — Mikey Buscetto scored 27 points in his final game as second-seeded Waterford cruised to a 90-67 victory over No. 9 Avon in Sunday morning's CIAC Division III boys' basketball tournament championship game at Mohegan Sun Arena.
It was the Lancers' second state title in seven years.
Buscetto, who leaves Waterford as the program's career scoring leader, also had 10 assists. J.J. Brennan came off the bench to add 19 points while Liam Spellman added 12 points and eight rebounds and Walker Sutman had 11 points and eight rebounds.
Waterford, which finishes 25-2, blew the game wide open in the third quarter when it outscored Avon 28-19 open a 70-45 lead after three quarters.
Waterford took control in first half, leading 17-9 after one quarter, using a 12-2 run to extend the lead to 33-18 and taking a 42-26 halftime lead on Buscetto's 3-pointer just before the buzzer.
Buscetto had 19 first-half points, including three treys, while Sutman had nine points and six rebounds and Brennan made 3 of 4 3-pointers for nine points.
